Program Spotlight

On Tuesday, October 23, 2023, we honored the members of the West Washington National Honors Society and inducted new members into both the West Washington Junior High and West Washington High School National Honors Society. A total of 10 high school and 15 junior high students were inducted and agreed to uphold the NHS Pledge, “I pledge myself to uphold the high purpose of this society to which I have been, selected, striving in every way by word and deed to make its ideals of my school and life.”

National Honor Society is a nation-wide organization that promotes the four pillars: scholarship, service, character, and leadership. The West Washington Chapter members are selected by invitation only and induction into the NHS is based upon a defined criteria. Candidates must have attained the following grade point average: sophomores (3.9), juniors (3.75), and seniors (3.5). Candidates must fill out an application, have community service, and write an essay defining examples of how they exemplify the qualities of the NHS four pillars. Applicants are then submitted to the faculty and honor society teacher committee for approval. “We are very proud of our newest inductees and current National Honor Society students. National Honor Society (NHS) is not only about academic accomplishments, but also about good character and a willingness to serve. Oftentimes NHS is considered to be only about having good grades but it does require more. Some examples of what our students do after being inducted might be serving as a peer tutor during Senator Seminar or volunteering hours at a local festival or on-campus event. For those students going to college, being an NHS student demonstrates stellar academics as well as having a service mentality inside and outside of the classroom. We are proud of our NHS students and greatly appreciate their work ethic,” stated West Washington High School Principal, Dr. Angela Girgis.

West Washington is blessed to have a strong NHS Chapter with committed members. Current high school NHS members include:  Jaxson Cambron, Kenton Chase, Braydon Crowder (Officer), Chloe Gramlin, Shelby Griffitts, Riley Hall (Officer), Christopher Long (Officer), Elliot Nance (Co-President), Eva O’Toole (Officer), Ian Rosenbaum, Titan Williams, Madeline Woosley (Co-President), Abigail Young, Addison Roop, Eric Williams, Emma Schmidt, Leauna Springer, Elle Strother, and Ava Woods.

The NHS high school new inductees include: Alaina Schmidt, Brandon Ault, Caleb Pavey, Laney Cambron, Layla Manship, Meredith Deaton, Alex Houchin, Bailey Hardwick, Clark Nance, and Elizabeth Henry.

The NHS junior high new inductees include: Jayden Braye, Delia Brown, Rylee Davidson, Belle Farmer, Autumn Jecker, Samantha Jordan, Jonas Loughmiller, Maggie Morrow, Maci Muchler, Logan Powers, Estin Roop, Ira Suvak, Jent Tankersley, Liddy Williams, and Isaac Worley.

West Washington High School teacher and NHS sponsor, John Harkness, is very passionate about NHS and is extremely proud of West Washington’s current and newly inducted members. “During 9/11 in 2001, a phrase was coined regarding the first responders in New York: "They ran in when everyone was running out." This mindset of heroism is what I think of when I see the young men and women in this year's NHS. Not that they will necessarily run into burning buildings, but when problems arise or something needs to be done, these are the people who will run toward the issue when it may be easier to run away. THAT’S how proud I am of our National Honor Society and what it represents,” explained Mr. Harkness.

Congratulations to all NHS student’s for their commitment to excellence!
