“Our students, staff, and community are extremely excited with this hire and the experience and knowledge Coach Cummings brings with him.  We feel extremely fortunate to be able to have Coach Cummings leading our boys program.  He has a lot of experience and has worked with some great coaches and gained knowledge and experience from working with them.  He is going to push these kids as he knows the key to success is through hard work.  From talking with former players he has coached, they all had nothing but praise for him in how he treated them and helped them grow into a man.  I’m very excited to have him leading the Senator Basketball Program,” explained West Washington Athletic Director, Darrin Russell.

Coach Cummings experience and accomplishments include:

  • Won State Championship in 1990 at BNL (starting point guard)

  • Played 2 years at Rose Hulman

  • Played 2 years at Oakland City

  • Through his workouts, he has trained numerous all-state players and college players

  • Played for Dan Bush and coached with Damon Bailey, Tom Bradley, Mark Ryan, Jamie Hudson, and Jared Gilbert

  • Former Mitchell High School Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach

Coach Cummings will put his experience to work with his job responsibilities including all aspects of boys basketball from the high school varsity level all the way down to our elementary school students.  “I have loved basketball as far back as I can remember, including playing in high school and college.  I have coached every year since 1996 except one year when I was in Afghanistan.  I have coached at Bedford North Lawrence, Mitchell, and Orleans.  I have coached both boys and girls, but mostly boys,” Coach Cummings shared.

When asked what Coach Cummings loves most about coaching, he was quick to respond with one word, “Relationships.” This comes as no surprise while he pridefully spoke about his family.  “I am married and we have two kids.  They are both married and have two kids also.  That means God has blessed us with four grandchildren,”  he explained with a smile.

Coach Cummings recognizes the great opportunity in front of him as he explains his attraction to West Washington.  “The facilities are great and the people I have met are even better.  I am familiar with the PLAC and know that the West Washington area is blue collared.  To be successful at anything, you have to work hard and I think that is part of the culture of this area,” described Coach Cummings.

Coach Cummings is excited about his new opportunity at West Washington and has wasted no time getting started.  In a short week, he has already met with his high school players, started planning the basketball summer calendar, and has set some skill workouts for our youth kids K-6.

West Washington Community Schools Superintendent, Keith Nance, expressed his excitement for the new hire as well.  “We are thrilled to have Coach Cummings join the Senator Family.  We were looking for a coach that would push our athletes and treat them well.  I am confident that Coach Cummings can do both of those things while building a winning culture,” he noted.

When Coach Cummings is rarely not coaching basketball, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends, as well as lifting weights and working out.
