Senator Basketball

Throughout winter break, the West Washington (WW) Boys Basketball team played five games and continued to improve their performance during practice.

The Senators started with the Holiday Tourney, where they placed first! Then the team took a small break to celebrate the Holidays with their friends and family.

Next up, WW took on the Cement City Classic. “We placed third in the Cement City Classic. Our first game we started off playing Loogootee. We got off to a really slow start and just couldn’t get the lead. Our kids played really well after the first three minutes. They stuck to the game plan and held their best players to a season low,” WW head coach Ashton Minton said.

The final score against Loogootee was 55-52, with the Senators taking the loss.

“Our next two games against Rock Creek and Mitchell, we played very well, winning both games by over 20. Overall, we were pleased with our performance in the tournament. If you take away the first three minutes of the Loogootee game, it is the best basketball we have played all year,” Minton said.

WW beat Rock Creek 77-55. In the battle for third place in the tournament, the Senators beat Mitchell 55-32!

Most recently, the team played against Trinity Lutheran, where they lost in overtime.

“Another game where, defensively, we played extremely well. We held them to 43 points in regulation. They have two really solid players who could go for 30 on any given night. We held them double under their averages during regulation. During overtime, we got off to a slow start, and that changed the game overall. We had to start fouling and give all the credit to them; they didn’t miss one single free throw during overtime. Overall, this is a game we feel like we should have won after clawing all the way back and taking the lead just before regulation ended. We will have to watch film and learn from this game the rest of the year,” Minton said.

At this point in the season, during practice, the team is identifying things they have struggled with. “As the week goes on, we are doing a lot of shooting and preparing for our next opponents. Throughout the week, we watch a lot of film on any given day,” Minton said.

Next up, the Senators will be competing against Perry Central.

“Perry Central has been playing really well recently. They have a new coach and seem to be clicking with their new system. We have to take away their two best players overall and be ready for a physical game the entire night. Playing at Perry is always a challenge for any team. We are looking for our first conference win, so we will have to play physical and play well for four quarters,” Minton said.

The game against Perry is away with a 6:30 p.m. EST start time!
