WCCF

Three teachers at the West Washington School Corporation received the Mahuron Grant from the Washington County Community Foundation. Ms. Jennifer Stahl (HS English), Mrs. Bobbi Rutherford (3rd Grade) and Mrs. Sherri Hoar (1st Grade) all submitted an application and were approved for their unique classroom activities.

Ms. Stahl applied for the grant to fund an extension activity for her AP Literature class. In the spring they will be reading the novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. The 1999 book tells the story of two young boys growing up in Afghanistan during turbulent times. The boys spend their days building elaborate kites. At the conclusion of reading the book, the student will have the opportunity to construct their own kites and fly them. The Mahuron Grant funds will be used to purchase all the materials needed to build the kites.

Mrs. Rutherford applied for the grant to fund flexible seating options that help with fidgety children. The wobble cushion chairs can be used throughout the classroom to help students stay focused. The seats will be used throughout the day and anywhere in the classroom. Flexible seating has been shown to increase attention and engagement of students that struggle to sit still.

Ms. Hoar applied for the grant to fund STEM activities in her first grade classroom. The activities will enhance science, technology, engineering and math skills. The activities are highly engaging and spur creativity and imagination. It also increases collaboration between students and teaches them to work as a team. The STEM manipulatives being purchased with the grant will utilize visual skills and logic to create 3-D designs.

Thank you Washington County Community Foundation for your generous support of WWSC and the Mahuron family for setting up the fund. In addition, a big thank you to the three teachers awarded the grant for taking the initiative to apply for the grant and creating exciting ways to make learning engaging and fun.
